<image:title>Stories - We’d whisper in their ears that they were not alone, that it was okay to be scared, and that we wouldn't leave them</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m sharing this story because I want everyone out there who is terrified of this virus, and those on the frontlines, to know that this is a shared pain. This is a shared experience, and a shared victory after defeating this heinous invisible enemy. This war is ongoing. Every single battle we win is monumental and deserves to be shared so that hope stands strong, faith unwavering, and victory assured. I’m a new nurse from Texas, living in New York alone and working for one of the top cancer institutions in the country. I was elated to find a home on M7, a bone marrow transplant floor at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The nurses on the floor are intelligent, caring, motivated and passionate about the care they give. When we were told the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic would start on our floor, the fear and dread began to set in. Most of us are new to nursing and we're just learning how to be transplant nurses. Now we were faced with fighting this emerging and terrifying virus. Yet the support we received was unbelievable. Staff members from all over the regional sites, and other floors came to help us in the battle against COVID-19. We were all terrified and unsure of ourselves, but every time we stepped into the room those fears were pushed back because of our sense of purpose. It was time to do what we love to do: help those in need. The difficult part of this was the alienation experienced as many patients lost their lives, often alone away from their loved ones. In those final moments, despite the risk of infection, multiple staff members including myself would hold the hands of the patient. We’d whisper in their ears that they were not alone, that it was okay to be scared, and that we wouldn't leave them. The emotional and heart-wrenching pain they felt in those final moments were dispelled by the care and love the M7 nurses provided for these patients. Every patient that fought this virus and succeeded in defeating it was clapped and cheered as they left our floor. Why? Because they gave us hope. Despite all the death and fear, something amazing came out of it: resilience. This kept us coming back every day, because we knew that we were needed. Even as our co-workers fell ill, we still continued on fighting the battle. The support from the community was as unrelenting as the battle going on in the hospital. The donations of food from different restaurants, products from different companies, masks and protective gear, and strangers’ shows of support showed us the humanity and love amidst this chaotic time. The community showed that this is a shared experience. Shared losses. Shared fears. Shared determination, and shared hope. Three months were long and challenging but the bond created with our staff members was something I will never forget. We cried together, laughed together, broke down together, and survived together. We defeated the virus on our floor, and with it the fear and dread we’d felt at every single moment from the time we knew that the coronavirus had infiltrated our floor. The war is far from over, but the heroes on M7 are ready and preparing for another fight when it comes. I want this story to be shared because I know at the moment many are still in the middle of this fight. Perhaps they feel as if it will never end, and are unsure of themselves. I want them to know it is okay to be scared. It is okay to be angry. It is okay to feel defeated. All of this was felt throughout our journey, No journey is easy. Every obstacle, every bump on the road is painful. But at last we reached our destination. Hang in there. The world sees what you do. We know what you do that the world doesn't see. The strength and resilience in your hands will overcome this enemy. We're in this together. Stay strong, and thank you for all you do! Hakeem Shoola, RN, NYC</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - I am afraid that the surge in the infection rates could lead to innumerable losses of human life</image:title>
<image:caption>I want to share this story to thank my medical colleagues for their efforts during this pandemic. Medical staff who are your own family members deserve extra appreciation! I am one of two doctors who are siblings. Together, we are busy being frontline warriors and helping patients to overcome this battle with a smile! Right now, I am most afraid that the surge in the infection rates could lead to innumerable losses of human life if we don’t take responsibility for our actions and environment. Maintaining good hygiene at all times is the need of the hour. My happiest moment during this crisis has been when we as a family of doctors always motivate each other to do well in our respective fields. We also motivate each other to always smile at the patient! I wish the world knew that we can overcome this pandemic by being stronger and united as a community, and by following the protocols of social distancing. <image:title>Stories - Systemic racism exists and contributes to inequality in healthcare and the quality of care given</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been quiet this weekend, not because I didn’t feel it wasn’t important to speak out against racism, but to reflect inwards at my own unchecked biases and privileges. I need to do better to be better. As a physician, I recognize that there are racial disparities in the US healthcare system. Black Americans are at higher risk of dying from Covid-19. They suffer higher rates of hypertension and diabetes. Black women are more than 2-3 times as likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth than White women. Black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday than white babies. Why do these disparities exist when as human beings, we are 99.9% identical in our genetic makeup? Why do inequalities exist when we all bleed the same color? Systemic racism exists and contributes to inequality in healthcare and the quality of care given. It also exists in regards to income, education, housing, and criminal justice. This has to change. As a mother, my heart goes out to George Floyd and his family. Hearing him call out for his mother as he was murdered broke my heart. How many Black Americans have senselessly lost their lives? This has to stop. It is important for us to speak to our children and teach them about racial differences and the beauty in diversity. Children learn racism from a very young age, so it is never too early to start the conversation with them. Change starts within us and within our own homes. Start there. We need to educate ourselves and address our own biases because they do exist. Then speak out against racism. Speak out against the injustices that Black Americans face on a daily basis. Then act. Act by donating to organizations for Racial Justice such as @naacp, @mnfreedomfund, @community.united defense fund, @bailproject and @aclu if you are able to. Act by voting in local, state, and national elections. These are just a few things that we can do. Change takes time, but we must start to make the necessary changes. So don’t stay quiet. Don’t do nothing. We all need to stand up against racism because #BlackLivesMatter. Avi Varma, MD, Physician, Atlanta, Georgia</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Every day something new is discovered</image:title>
<image:caption>I want to share this story to raise awareness, and to help people understand that every life matters. Every time a patient wins a fight and is discharged healthy and almost recovered, my heart jumps with joy. It’s always difficult to tell what’s going to happen because someone can be doing fine one day, and the next day rapidly deteriorate. I had a handful of young patients who became critical during the process of seeing what was working and what wasn’t. All that would go through my mind was that they still had a long life ahead of them, and we had to figure out a way to make it happen. Luckily, we were able to do that for many. Nothing can compare to the feeling each and every time we do. I wish the world knew that the virus is still so unknown. Every day something new is discovered, whether it’s that medications being used are actually harming more than helping, or that it’s impacting children and young adults in ways we didn’t anticipate. Every single life matters and we need to be careful, prudent, and compassionate. You never know who’s going to get it, what their outcome may be, or if they have a loved one who’s been impacted. Protect one another. Protect those around you. Wear a mask and help control the spread. Social distancing is going to be very important as businesses reopen. <image:title>Stories - Don’t be afraid to join in those uncomfortable moments</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m writing this story to inspire other nurses who are wanting to switch specialties, but are afraid to leave what they know. I have been a nurse since 2014. After graduating nursing school, I jumped into a nurse residency program in the emergency department at a local hospital in my area. The ER was exciting, challenging, and led to many amazing learning experiences. Yet about two years ago, I started to feel unfulfilled. I thought maybe I needed a change in scenery to bring back my passion for the Emergency Department, so I started travel nursing. Although it brought more great experiences and some amazing people into my life, the ER just didn’t feel right for me anymore. For a year and a half, I reflected on these feelings and thought back to what I felt passionately about when I was learning as a student. I was always fascinated by cardiac issues and the cardiac system, so I thought to myself: “Where can I continue to learn, and fill this void for passionate nursing with a focus on cardiac patients?” I remembered that for a previous job interview, I’d written down goals as to where I saw my career in 5 years. I’d written down that I would love to be a part of the cardiac Catheterization Laboratory team at the hospital I had interviewed for. So I decided in that moment that I would not settle for what was comfortable, that I was going to take a leap of faith and start a new journey as a Cath Lab RN! Leaving the Emergency Department was scary to say the least. I had become an expert in my speciality, a resource for new graduates, and a leader for my team. Coming to a new department where I now was again a novice nurse at times felt discouraging and frustrating, and it was definitely difficult. But at the end of each week, things started to come together. Things are still becoming more manageable, and I am starting to be able to anticipate our next move. I am slowly seeing progress in my skills and knowledge again. Switching specialities can be frightening. It may make you feel like you want to quit and go back to what you know. I have had to accept being comfortable with being uncomfortable for now. I know that I won’t feel this way forever. I want anyone who is thinking about trying something new to know that you can always grow and learn new things, no matter what stage your career is in! Don’t be afraid to join in those uncomfortable moments. It’s in these moments that we learn the most about ourselves, and rise to the challenge! Most importantly, don’t stay in an area that’s causing you to forget why you became a nurse. Look within yourself and find that passion again! <image:title>Stories - You risk your life in exchange for the lives of others</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m sharing this because I want people to know that being in the healthcare field is not just a job. It’s a life choice. It requires you to risk your life in exchange for the lives of others. I’m in the healthcare field myself, and so I understand how tough this is. Especially in a pandemic. This photo is of my baby sister. She is a gastroenterology fellow, and now a COVID-19 frontliner. Two months ago she hung up her scope and put on her white coat to be an attending physician, taking care of COVID-19 patients in one of the hardest hit hospitals in Queens, New York. Fast forward 2 months. She is now back in GI, doing what she loves. I remember the times when she would call me to talk about her daily endeavors, her fear of a new normal in the COVID era, and her trepidation when it came to meeting friends and family, or frankly, anyone at all. Yet every day, she puts on her personal protective equipment and a brave face, and she does it over and over again. I am so incredibly proud of her. Right now I am most afraid for my sister’s health, for her mental wellbeing, and for her physical wellbeing. The happiest moment during the COVID crisis was when she told me that she was going back to gastroenterology! Yay! The smiles on her face whenever her patients get discharged make me smile too. Her saddest stories from the COVID crisis would be when her patients died. My sister, the frontliner, has been the most influential person in my life during this crisis. Of course! I wish the world knew that being a healthcare worker is not just a job. It’s so much more than that. - Huei Wen Lim, Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology, New York City, NY</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - ICU beds were almost full, and I had only one bed available in the ICU with a ventilator</image:title>
<image:caption>I want to share this story because I want people to know it’s not easy being in the frontline every day, risking our own lives, to take care of people we don’t know. In the Quran, ALLAH says: “If anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole humanity.” Right now, I am most afraid of all this affecting my mental health. There’s just too much helplessness, pain, despair, and frustration in seeing even young previously healthy patients die right in front of you when you have done everything you can to save them. The happiest moment for me during COVID-19 crisis was when I tested negative after 60 days of continuous COVID duty. It was time for the EID holiday. I could finally go home to my loved ones without the fear of infecting them. The saddest moment during COVID-19 was when I received two patients who were COVID positive. One was a 60-year-old female with many comorbidities, and one was 25-year-old female with no previous history of any disease. Both were very sick and disoriented. ICU beds were almost full, and I had only one bed available in the ICU with a ventilator. My team decided to send the 25-year-old female to the ventilator bed as she was a better candidate and had better chances of survival. Thirty minutes after shifting her to the ICU, I lost my 60-year-old patient. I felt so helpless. I had to inform her son over the phone, who left me in charge to take care of her. My parents are the most influential people in my life right now. They support me in my decision to be a COVID warrior. It’s because of their support that I am a doctor today. I am the chosen one to provide the best care, to the best of my abilities, to my patients. I wish the world knew what it’s like wearing PPE for 12-14 hrs at a stretch during this hot summer, treating patients with fogging all over glasses, unable to drink, pee, or breathe properly. I wish people knew that we too have families back at home who are desperately praying every hour for our safety, and for us to come home soon.
